ROCKVILLE, MD — The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Montgomery County increased by 1 percent, or by 115 cases, since Sunday, bringing its total to 11,476.

That is the second lowest daily percentage increase since the pandemic hit the county on March 5. The lowest daily percentage increase (0.97) was recorded on Sunday.

To date, the Maryland Health Department is reporting 576 deaths in Montgomery County. Another 40, health officials believe, likely died from COVID-19 without ever being tested.

The latest figures come as the county on Monday began lifting its coronavirus restrictions. Phase one of County Executive Marc Elrich's plan includes reopening restaurants for outdoor dining, allowing barbershops and hair salons to serve customers by appointment only, and limiting the number of children and counselors at outdoor day camps.

Until Thursday, Montgomery County was the only jurisdiction in the state that didn't set a date to reopen.

Gov. Larry Hogan lifted coronavirus restrictions in the state on May 15, but allowed harder hit jurisdictions — like Montgomery and Prince George's counties — to delay reopening.

Montgomery County, which is home to roughly 1.1 million residents, continues to have the highest number of deaths in the state. It also has the second highest number of confirmed cases, after Prince George's County, which has 15,353, according to the latest figures.

Across Maryland, health officials are reporting 53,327 confirmed cases and 2,431 deaths. An additional 121 people probably had COVID-19, but died without getting tested, officials said.

There are 1,174 coronavirus patients currently hospitalized in Maryland. Of that, 479 are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
