Car Fire That Killed Sandy Spring Woman Was Intentional: Police

Police said the woman died from "smoke inhalation and thermal injuries," and they believe the fire was intentional.

SILVER SPRING, MD — Authorities recently released more information about a 56-year-old woman found dead in a burning car in Sandy Spring over a year ago.

Police said Monday that someone intentionally set the car on fire while Andrea Mion Hawvermale, of Sandy Spring, was inside of it.

The incident occurred the morning of June 17, 2017. Officers received a call for a vehicle fire on the property of a residence in the 1300 block of Excaliber Lane.

Officers responded to the area and located Hawvermale deceased in the car, police said.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore conducted an autopsy and ruled that Hawvermale’s death was caused by smoke inhalation and thermal injuries, police said Monday.

Investigators from the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service "determined that a non-accidental incendiary fire was the cause of the vehicle fire," police said.

The manner of Hawvermale's death remains pending.

Investigators from the Major Crimes Division and MCFRS continue to investigate this vehicle fire and suspicious death.
