Cyclist, Pedestrian Killed In Separate Crashes In Montgomery County (patch.com) — Two people have died in separate traffic crashes in Montgomery County, including a pedestrian struck near Georgia and Silver Spring avenues in downtown Silver Spring early Friday morning. Less than a day earlier, a cyclist was fatally hit by an SUV on New Hampshire Avenue. Police are still investigating both incidents and have not yet released the victims’ names.
   

2. Powerball Jackpot Hits $1.5 Billion; Two Maryland Players Win $50K (mdlottery.com) — A still-unclaimed $50,000 Powerball ticket was sold at Silver Spring Cheese & Wine on Georgia Avenue, and another previously claimed winning ticket also came from Silver Spring. The story details where recent Maryland winners bought their tickets and notes the jackpot has climbed to $1.5 billion, with millions in sales benefiting the state budget.
   

3. Two Maryland men plead guilty in $11M money laundering conspiracy (dcnewsnow.com) — A Silver Spring man has admitted to helping run a large money laundering scheme that moved more than $11 million from wire fraud, personally receiving at least $1 million. Federal prosecutors say he and a Hyattsville co-defendant targeted multiple organizations, including a school district and medical center. Both now face up to 20 years in prison, with sentencings set for spring 2026.
   

4. Disaster Relief Efforts from the Jamaican Diaspora (sflcn.com) — Silver Spring’s Civic Center is being praised for helping coordinate a major Jamaican hurricane relief shipment organized through the Jamaican Embassy and regional partners. Volunteers and organizations across the D.C.-Maryland-Virginia area, including Montgomery County officials, helped send a container of essential supplies to communities hit hard by Hurricane Melissa, with more support efforts still encouraged.
   

5. FDA issues 2 separate recalls over contamination with harmful bacteria and undeclared allergen (oann.com) — Silver Spring gets a brief spotlight as the FDA’s White Oak campus is shown in coverage of two new nationwide food recalls. One involves a mild cheddar cheese potentially contaminated with listeria, and the other a Publix rice-and-pigeon-peas dish mislabeled in a way that hides soy, posing serious risks for people with weakened immune systems or soy allergies.
