Heavy snow mixed with sleet and freezing rain are in the forecast Thursday for much of Maryland, prompting the National Weather Service to issue alerts across the state.

Montgomery County is under a winter storm warning from 3 a.m. Thursday to 6 a.m. Friday.

Parts of central and northern Maryland could see 4 to 8 inches of heavy snow, sleet, and freezing rain by Friday morning. Ice could be about 0.1 inch.

The Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area is likely to see 3 to 6 inches of snow, based on the projections, with up to 0.25 inch ice that could lead to outages and make travel nearly impossible.

Due to icy and slippery conditions, people should watch their first few steps outside on stairs, driveways, and sidewalks.

Travel could be very difficult, possibly impacting the morning or evening commute. If people must drive, they should keep an extra flashlight, as well as food and water in their vehicles.
