Gwendolyn Coffield Rec Center​ Reopening After Serving As A Shelter

SILVER SPRING, MD — The Gwendolyn E. Coffield Community Recreation Center is reopening to the public June 13 after serving as a shelter during the COVID-19 pandemic, the county announced.

A celebration is scheduled for June 18, which will include a movie night music, food, a live Encanto character, Father's Day drum circle, Juneteenth Freedom Day Table and a TikTok dance booth.

“The reopening makes it possible for the center to once again be a place for young people, families, and older adults to spend their leisure time,” said Montgomery County Recreation Director Robin Riley in a news release. “We have been working behind the scenes to have a facility that where we can offer high-quality recreation programming for everyone.”

The rec center, located in the Rosemary Hills community, has recreation programs, a softball field, a football/soccer field, two multi-use fields, four tennis courts, a playground and a picnic area.

The operating hours for the Gwendolyn Coffield Community Recreation Center will be:

• Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
• Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
• Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Long Branch Community Center reopened May 16 — it also served as a housing shelter during the pandemic. That center has sports clinics, cooking classes, fitness, martial arts and futsal for all ages, as well as a Senior Center will special programming.

The Gwendolyn Coffield Community Recreation Center is at 2450 Lyttonsville Road in Silver Spring. The Long Branch Community Center is at 8700 Piney Branch Road in Silver Spring.
