Montgomery County Coronavirus Infections Rose 4% In Past Day

More than 6,000 people have contracted COVID-19 in Montgomery County, as of May 7. Here's the latest.

SILVER SPRING, MD — The number of people who have contracted COVID-19 in Montgomery County has increased by 242 — or 4 percent — to 6,032, according to data released by Maryland health officials on Thursday.

Eleven more deaths were also reported by the state Health Department, pushing the countywide fatality count to 315.

It is not immediately known how old the victims were when they died — or if they had underlying medical conditions. But so far, health officials say no one under the age of 20 has died from COVID-19.

In recent weeks, the state began counting "probable deaths" — or deaths of individuals who likely were infected, but never tested. Previously, deaths were only counted if they tested positive for the disease.

As of Thursday, there have been 30 "probable deaths" in Montgomery County.

Statewide, 29,374 people have tested positive for the disease — an increase of 1,211 in the past day.

The virus has killed 1,401 people in Maryland. And the probable death toll now stands at 102.

Compared to all other jurisdictions in the state, Montgomery County has the highest number of deaths, according to health officials. It also has the second highest number of confirmed cases, after Prince George's County, which has 8,516.

Currently, 1,683 people are hospitalized with COVID-19 in Maryland. Of that total, 584 are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

To date, 119,226 people have tested negative for COVID-19 and 2,029 have been released from isolation.
