REPORT: Bad Economy May Force Silver Spring Nonprofit to Close

A Silver Spring nonprofit is feeling the woes of a weak economy and may have to shut its doors if its finances don’t improve, according to a Washington Post report.

The Washington Area Wheelchair Society (WAWS)—located at 8220 Mayor Ln—provides assistance to people with disabilities who need canes, wheelchairs, power scooters and other medial equipment.

Paul Holland, executive director, told the Washington Post the organization typically receives an average of $1,500 a month, but recently donations have been down and the group has fallen behind by two months.

Holland added that his organization was able to pay more than half of the $5,000 it needed to keep alive, but still needs $2,000 more to catch up.

WAWS has helped an estimated 60,000 people over the years it has been around, according to the Washington Post.
