Father Faces Manslaughter Charge In 4-Year-Old Daughter's Crash Death

Authorities say Felipe Hernandez, 24, was racing with another car when they crashed. Hernandez's daughter, who was in the backseat, died.

SILVER SPRING, MD — A Silver Spring man is facing manslaughter charges after police say he raced with another car on Georgia Avenue and crashed with a third car, killing his 4-year-old daughter in the backseat.

Felipe Hernandez, 24, was charged with manslaughter by motor vehicle, two separate counts of second-degree assault, and driving a vehicle in a speed contest, a news release from Montgomery County Police says.

Hernandez and Gilberto Duvan Guerra Posadas, 25, started an impromptu race southbound on Georgia Avenue and crashed with a Ford attempting to make a left from northbound Georgia Avenue onto Dexter Avenue, the news release says. Both racing vehicles hit the Ford, and Hernandez's car left the road and hit a brick wall, according to authorities.

The other two cars remained on the road.

Iliana Hernandez, the 4-year-old in the backseat, was taken to the hospital where she died, police said.

The other driver who raced Hernandez, a Germantown resident, is in custody in Indiana for unrelated charges and the driver that was hit while turning was issued several citations for driving under the influence of alcohol, police said.
