Takoma Metro Mural to Be Dedicated Tomorrow

The dedication is at 10 a.m. and open to the public.

A mural by D.C.-based artist Sam Gilliam has been installed at the Takoma Metro Station and will be dedicated in a ceremony tomorrow at the station at 10 a.m.

The mural, "From a Model to a Rainbow," was commissioned by the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities in cooperation with the Metro Art in Transit Program, according to a commission statement. The mural of multi-colored ceramic and glass tiles mounted on aluminum panels spans 400 square feet and measures 14 feet high and 39 feet wide. The artwork can be found at the station on the southern wall along Cedar Street.

Gilliam was selected from among 132 artists who submitted applications for the commission.

"I wanted to make a work that is part of its environment, yet changes that environment," said Gilliam in the commission statement. "A work filled with color and light."

Gilliam was a part of the Washington Color School, a group of abstract artists that showed work at the Washington Gallery of Modern Art in Dupont Circle in the late 50s and early 60s.
