If you're thinking about adding a pet to the family, consider doing it on Oct. 12 as the Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter (BARCS) is celebrating Columbus Day with free adoptions.

In an effort to find good homes for many adoptable pets, the Baltimore County Animal Shelter will hold an adoption promotion – Patriotic Pets, the Saturday before Columbus Day, according to a news release.

Any pet adopted or placed on hold for adoption on Saturday, Oct. 12 will be adopted free of charge. The cost of a cat or dog license is still required at the time of the adoption. Baltimore County law requires pets to be licensed and for rabies vaccinations to be kept up to date.

The typical cost of adoption ranges from $65 to $100 and includes spay/neuter and vaccinations.

The event will take place Saturday, Oct. 12 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Baltimore County Animal Shelter,  13800 Manor Rd. in Baldwin.
