BCPS Revisiting Social Media Practices

Following the recent and a closure at Wednesday, school system officials are looking into beefing up their social media communications. 

"We now have a superintendent who's extremely social media-savvy," said Charles Herndon, a Baltimore County Public Schools spokesman. 

Although most parents at the schools received calls from the Connect-Ed emergency notification system about the respective incidents, the school system was delayed in putting the information out via its Twitter and Facebook accounts. 

"It's something we'll need to look into," Herndon said. "We want to get the information out there as quickly and accurately as we can, and that's something we need to work on."

Herndon said the school system is also reconsidering the long-standing practice to completely block social media sites at schools. He said the reasoning behind this is that the school system didn't previously see an educational need to access the sites. 

"We're seeing now there is more of a need to begin opening those channels up," he said.
