Chadwick, Charlesmont Elementary Schools Claim Blue Ribbons

Two Baltimore County public schools were among six selected throughout the state to be named 2013 Maryland Blue Ribbon Schools.

The wins for Chadwick Elementary School in Woodlawn and Charlesmont Elementary School in Dundalk are particularly notable because they are both Title I schools, designated as such for their high populations of students from economically disadvantaged families and communities. Title I schools receive additional funding and resources to reduce the achievement gap.

"The success of these schools proves once again that family income does not determine academic achievement," said Superintendent Dallas Dance in a statement. "Great teachers and principals, involved parents, a strong academic program, and engaged students make all the difference. High academic achievement is our goal for every student in every school. Chadwick and Charlesmont help us achieve that and set an example of how to raise the bar."

A news release from Baltimore County Public Schools points to the high performance from both schools on standardized tests as a demonstration of their strong academics programs.

Maryland Blue Ribbon Schools are determined by standards set by the Maryland State Department of Education and the United States Department of Education.

Chadwick and Charlesmont are now contenders for National Blue Ribbons, the release states. The winners of this designation will be announced by the United States Department of Education in September.
