Hitting the Early Retirement Numbers

Deadline looms for county officials looking to eliminate 200 positions through voluntary program.

Nearly 600 Baltimore County employees have applied for an early retirement offering as a deadline for applying for the benefit looms.

County employees have until the end of the day today to apply for the program that county officials hope will provide up to $15 million in annual savings. The council in October.

About one quarter of the county's 8,000 general government employees were thought to be eligible to apply to take the early retirement.

The program offers up to three years credit towards retirement. The catch is that the position, or a similar position, must then be eliminated.

County officials said earlier this year that they hoped to close out about 200 positions and held out the possibility of layoffs if the figure was not met voluntarily.

Don Mohler, a county spokesman, said about 590 county employees had applied for the program as of Dec. 15.

It is not immediately clear how many of those employees will be granted the early retirement.

Final decisions about which positions can be closed out are to be made by County Administrative Officer Fred Homan.

Most employees who are granted the early retirement are expected to leave the county by the end of February.
