Homan To Brief Council On Pension System

The state of the nearly $2 billion system, possible additional reforms and a $25 million loan to build a new county recycling facility all possible topics.

UPDATED (11:40 a.m.)—Members of the Baltimore County Council are expected to get a briefing today on pension issues from County Administrative Officer Fred Homan.

Homan is scheduled to speak around 1 p.m., about an hour before the council's regularly scheduled work session.

The exact pension-related topic is not known. Members of the council are sure to have plenty of questions based on previous public discussions on the issue.

Homan could speak about additional needed pension reforms, the or perhaps even the pending $25 million loan the system will make to the county to build a at the Texas landfill in Cockeysville.

Sources tell Patch the discussion will include "very specific recommendations."

Earlier this year, Homan warned the council that additional changes to the pension system would be needed. The last major overhaul of the system was done in 2007. Currently, the pension system is about 77 percent funded.

Homan is also expected to meet later this afternoon with heads of the six unions that represent county employees and repeat the council briefing.
