So Much for a Honeymoon
County Council asks Van Arsdale for update on the restructuring of her new department after taking over a week ago.

Andrea Van Arsdale didn't get much of a honeymoon.
The veteran of county government for about two decades has been through a County Council confirmation process and took over as the new head of the Department of Planning last week. Tuesday, she appeared before the council to defend her new agency's $13 million budget.
Not bad for her first two weeks. Still, the council wanted to know how she is handling the restructuring of her new department.

"I'm working on it," Van Arsdale joked with the council. "I've only been there seven days and I don't have it worked out yet."
As part of her new job, Van Arsdale will be responsible for merging the Office of Community Conservation into the planning department.

The new department will be in charge of managing the upcoming quadrennial comprehensive zoning map process, providing assistance to the People's Counsel and some social programs such as assistance to the homeless that were once handled by the Office of Community Conservation.
Van Arsdale said that she plans the new office to "be very focused, be very efficient and be very outcome oriented."
She might need another week.
