Carver Center Announces Partnership with BSO

When it opens this fall, the new building for the will be an artistic hub for more than just its own students.

Baltimore County Public Schools announced Friday that the school will be the new home of the Baltimore Symphony Youth Orchestra. The orchestra, an initiative of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, will continue the work of the Greater Baltimore Youth Orchestra, which is set to cease operations at the end of the month.

“Having the Baltimore Symphony Youth Orchestras housed at Carver Center will provide opportunities and outreach to our students with musical enrichment activities,” Karen E. H. Steele, Carver's principal, said in a statement. “It will allow Carver Center students who participate in the BSYO to receive instruction, feedback, and audition preparation as part of their total Carver Center experience.”

The BSYO program will include elite musicians from 6 to 19 organized into a youth orchestra, concert orchestra and string orchestra. Auditions are scheduled for September 6-8.

The initiative is one of several community partnerships for Carver, which also has programs connecting the magnet high school's students with the Maryland Institute College of Art, The Hippodrome, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Center Stage and ClancyWorks Dance Company.

“The BSO is very eager to see the new Baltimore Symphony Youth Orchestras thrive and finding the right home is crucial to its success,” BSO President and CEO Paul Meecham said in a press release. “The Carver Center not only boasts an excellent new building but also shares the BSO’s mission to benefit young lives through quality arts education.”
