Child's Death At Loch Raven Reservoir Draws ‘No Swimming’ Warning

A 9-year-old died after a water rescue at Loch Raven Reservoir, police said. Firefighters warned residents that swimming is prohibited.

BALTIMORE COUNTY, MD — Firefighters warned that swimming is prohibited at Loch Raven Reservoir, located in central Baltimore County. The reminder came after police said a 9-year-old was pulled from the waters this week.

"The reservoirs were not designed for swimming and therefore are extremely dangerous to swim in, the bottom drops off quickly and without warning and the water is very deep," the Long Green Volunteer Fire Company said Tuesday on Facebook. "Even though the weather is hot and the reservoirs look inviting, PLEASE DO NOT SWIM!"

The Baltimore County Police Department said it was called to assist with the water rescue just after 5 p.m. Monday.

Police have not released the victim's name or the specifics of the call.

"If you are visiting a local reservoir and see others swimming please remind them that it is not safe and can result in a trespassing offense," the Long Green Volunteer Fire Company said. "We all need to do our part to prevent another tragedy from happening."
