Herring Run Water Quality, Erosion Being Studied

Baltimore County officials are studying a portion of Herring Run this summer to find ways to improve water quality and limit erosion.

The portion to be studied includes one branch along Glenkirk Road, near the Country Club of Maryland, and another that begins at Glendale Road and runs along Queens Ferry Road.

According to a letter sent to residents by the county's Department of Environmental Protection and Sustainability, officials hope to "identify possible restoration measures in order to improve water quality, reduce erosion, stabilize stream banks and protect public utilities.

Officials expressed concern about erosion and decomposition sighted in the stream near in Idlewylde.

The letter said design consultants from McCormick Taylor will be working near the stream "during the next few months" collecting data on water quality and erosion in the stream. Residents were advised that consultants may be in the stream near their property.

Herring Run is a tributary of Back River, which flows into the Chesapeake Bay. Last October, more than 1.16 million gallons of sewage had spilled into the stream.
