TOWSON, MD — Two high schools in the Towson area are gaining traction when it comes to funding, according to County Executive Johnny Olszewski Jr.

Baltimore County will allocate funds for planning and design to create a new Dulaney High School campus and a "like-new Towson High School," Olszewski said in a statement Tuesday.

"Improving these schools has been a top priority for this administration, and we are proud to take the next steps to bring these projects to reality," a statement from Olszewksi's office said.

In September, the Baltimore County Board of Education voted to replace Dulaney and Towson high schools, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Dulaney High School was built in 1964, according to state school construction records. Since 2014, a group called the Friends of Dulaney High School has been advocating for new facilities at the school.

A similar group called Families for a New Towson High School also formed.

Because Towson High School is historic, WYPR reported in December that Olszewski supported only renovating it rather than rebuilding the structure.

He attributed the forward progress announced Tuesday to additional state funding.

The money comes from the $1 billion budget Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan proposed to fund school construction, according to WBAL Radio.
