Marks, GTC Ask State Officials to Name Bridge For General

County Councilman David Marks and a group of business leaders are asking state officials to rename the new Charles Street bridge.

In separate letters to Sudhir M. Trivedi, chair of the Maryland Transportation Commission, Marks and the Greater Towson Committee asked that the bridge be named for Nathaniel Towson, the decorated War of 1812 general born in then-Towsonton in 1784. (The town was named for his father and brother, who settled here in 1752.)

Gen. Towson fought on battlefields including Stoney Creek, Buffalo and Queenstown.

"As Maryland commemorates thr 200th anniversary of the War of 1812, this would be an appropriate recognition of a prominent figure who made outstanding contributions to our country during this conflict," Marks wrote in his letter.

The bridge over the Baltimore Beltway has been under reconstruction since 2009, with the $43.6 million project set to finish later this year.
