5 PG Schools Receive National Recognition for Healthy Initiatives
These awards were given to schools exhibiting exemplary improvements in nutrition services and activity programs for their students.

From Prince George’s County Public Schools:
The Alliance for a Healthier Generation, founded by the American Heart Association and the William J. Clinton Foundation, recently recognized five Prince George’s County public schools for their efforts to transform their sites into healthier places for students and staff.
“I commend staff and students in these schools for the work they are doing to promote wellness,” said Dr. Kevin M. Maxwell, Chief Executive Officer for Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS). “We are committed to creating a culture of healthy lifestyles choices throughout our district.”

During the Alliance’s Leader’s Summit in Washington, D.C., High Bridge Elementary School was presented with the prestigious the Silver Award and Chillum, Doswell E. Brooks, Gladys Noon Spellman, and Montpelier elementary schools were presented with Bronze Awards.
The Alliance welcomed 250 schools from across the nation to the 2014 Leaders Summit, nine of them representing Maryland. To earn their National Recognition Awards, schools improved their nutrition services and physical activity programs to meet or exceed standards set by the Alliance’s Healthy Schools Program. Strategies including changing snack policies, adding physical activity breaks during the school day, offering after-school activity programs, and implementing employee wellness programs.
