Crash Victim Rescue Earns Honor for Firefighters and Medics

The heroes saved a pulseless woman who was entangled in her seatbelt June 15.

Seven Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Department members were awarded with County Emergency Services Awards and Exemplary Firefighter Awards for life-saving actions in a June 15 incident.

When a car crash became life-threatening for one woman the Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Department took control of the situation.

A motor vehicle accident was reported in the 7600 block of Central Avenue on June 15. The SUV had gone off the road and hit a large concrete curb. Two passengers were trapped inside the vehicle and the driver was standing outside when officials arrived, PGFD reports. The 50-year-old female passenger was in the front seat and not breathing. The 74-year-old female passenger was shifted from the back seat to the console area during the collision and became entangled in the front seat victim’s seatbelt.

Medics realized that the 74-year-old passenger stopped breathing and had a strong carotid and radial pulses. She was loaded into the ambulance where ventilations, according to the PGPD. The victim went unconscious during the transportation to the Prince George’s Trauma Center but regained consciousness the next day. Six days later she did not show evidence of major trauma and was discharged.

Unfortunately one person was killed in the accident and another was injured.

The firefighters and medics involved in the rescue were recognized in a ceremony at St. Joseph Fire/EMS Station in Springdale Jan. 5.

“Your performance on the scene of the aforementioned incident significantly contributed to saving the life of a gravely injured patient. Therefore, you are hereby awarded a Fire/EMS Department Emergency Service Award,” Fire Chief Marc Bashoor said at the ceremony. “Your actions not only speak well of you personally but also illustrate the excellent caliber of service the Fire/EMS Department strives to provide to the citizens of Prince George’s County.”
