Douglass' NJROTC Program To Be Disestablished
The U.S. Navy says low participation in the Upper Marlboro high school's program means it will no longer exist.

Starting in July 2013, will no longer host a Navy Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (NJROTC) program, according to U.S. Navy officials.
Douglass High is one of the nine schools on the Navy's list to have its NJROTC program disestablished on June 30, 2013, after it had low enrollment, according NavalToday.com.

Other schools affected are in California, Washington, Texas, South Carolina and New Hampshire, the report said.
Rear Adm. David F. Steindl, the commander of the Naval Service Training Command (NSTC), told NavalToday.com that programs with low enrollment would have to be cut because of projected funding loss. There are approximately 600 NJROTC and Navy National Defense Cadet Corps (NNDCC) programs across the nation.

According to NSTC code, any school with 1,000 students or more enrolled must have at least 100 NJROTC members. If the school has less than 1,000 students, the NJROTC should have at least 10 percent of the population.
Douglass' student enrollment was at 1,085 in 2011, according to Maryland State Assessment data.
