Fatal House Fire on New Years Day in Laurel

80-year-old resident suffered from burns covering almost half of her body, PGFD reports.

A New Years Day fire in Laurel claimed the life of one resident, according to the Prince George’s County Fire Department.

Firefighters and paramedics responded to the blaze in the 7200 block of Carriage Hill Drive around 9:45 p.m. Jan. 1. Officials found a burned piece of furniture that appeared to be extinguished by the 80-year-old female resident of the home, PGFD reports. Responders made sure that the fire was completely out in the two-story home.

The victim was suffering from burn injuries that covered almost half of her body and was transported to the Burn Unit in Washington, D.C.

The unidentified female died from her injuries just before 4 p.m. Jan. 2.

Officials report that the fire seems to be an accident and the name of the deceased will be released once the family is notified.
