Rachel Jordan receives DNPs of Color Dr. Virginia Allen Award
Jordan was honored by DNPs of Color with the Dr. Virginia Allen Distinguished Honorable Service to Humanity in Nursing Practice Award

Hospice of the Chesapeake Director of Advocacy & Legislative Affairs Rachel Jordan was honored by DNPs of Color with the Dr. Virginia Allen Distinguished Honorable Service to Humanity in Nursing Practice Award. She received the award at the Dr. Virginia Allen & Mary Eliza Mahoney Scholarship and Awards Gala held Oct. 19 at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia.
Jordan was celebrated along with other outstanding individuals from across the country who are dedicated to advancing nursing practice and health equity while celebrating the creativity and leadership within our community.
In his letter of recommendation to the organization, Prince George’s County Council Vice Chair and District 9 Council Member Sydney Harrison wrote, “The rapport she’s built with the community and external organizations are commendable. Her selfless service demonstrates the will to positively influence and inspire those around her to achieve their goals. As a councilman, I seek community leaders who believe in producing quality outcomes and it brings me joy to know that nurses like Dr. Jordan share their knowledge and expertise so that others may thrive.”

The award Jordan received is named for a woman who was among a group of Black nurses who cared for tuberculosis patients at Sea View Hospital in New York when few nurses would. Known as the Black Angels, their commitment to caring for these patients was no doubt an important part of the journey to finding a cure.
“To receive this award that pays homage to such a remarkable woman is overwhelming,” Jordan said. “I aspire to be the kind professional who is so dedicated to health equity and the highest of standards in nursing. Dr. Allen is an inspiration to Black women like me in the medical field and in the community.”
