Nonprofit Spotlight: Wheaton Volunteer Rescue Squad

We spoke to a member of the Wheaton Volunteer Rescue Squad to share how they're making a difference in our community.

The Wheaton Volunteer Rescue Squad is a vital part of our community, providing fire, rescue and emergency medical services to our neighbors and community members.

We reached out to Chris Yuen, an EMT and Emergency Vehicle Operator with the Wheaton Volunteer Rescue Squad:

What is the most rewarding part about being a member of the rescue squad?

The rewards of being a member of the rescue squad are innumerable. The most rewarding parts of being a member of the rescue squad, though, can be summed up in the moments we get to interact with patients. We’ve all experienced the satisfaction that comes when we’re able to relieve the pain of a broken arm, soothe the cry of a hurting child, or lend a helping hand to someone in need. The interaction we have with people in our community is priceless to us and there is nothing more rewarding than the feeling of giving back.

Why is the Wheaton Volunteer Rescue Squad so important to the community?

The Wheaton Volunteer Rescue Squad has been a vital part of the community for 60 years. Weekdays, from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., the squad is staffed by Montgomery County Department of Fire and Rescue Services, and at all other times including weekends, the squad is staffed completely by volunteers. We provide the community with heavy rescue, BLS (Basic Life Support) and ALS (Advanced Life Support) services 365 days a year.

What skills have you learned from being a member of WVRS?

We’ve all learned new skills, like splinting fractures, back-boarding spinal injuries, and understanding the indications for giving different medications. We’ve also gained working experience, met new people both within and outside of the squad, and gotten to know the hidden streets of our neighborhood.

What can the community do to get involved?

The Wheaton Volunteer Rescue Squad’s continued existence and operations are contingent on the donations and support of the community. To get involved, the community can keep a lookout for our many fundraising events that are fun for all ages:

  • Latin Gala
  • Shrimp and Oyster Feast
  • Pancake Breakfast with Santa
  • Annual Christmas Tree Sale ...and more!

The community has always been very supportive of purchasing Christmas trees and wreaths from the squad. Additionally, the Ballroom at Wheaton Glen, which is housed at our station, includes a ballroom, full catering kitchen, and conference room that are available for booking.

How can community members join the squad?

Members of the community who are interested in joining the squad can stop by anytime to learn more about WVRS, tour the station, and see our units. Also, check our website for more info and application forms. We are always looking for more members!
