MASSACHUSETTS — The state Department of Conservation and Recreation will begin booking reservations for campsites in early March, kicking off the rush for spots in some of the state's most scenic places.

Reservations for state campgrounds will begin at 9 a.m. on March 9, when campers can book yurts, cabins, primitive campsites and RV sites up to four months in advance. DCR operates 25 campsites across the state, although the campgrounds at Mt. Greylock and Beartown State Forest in Stockbridge won't be available this season.

Some of the state's most popular campsites are out on the coast, including Nickerson State Park in Brewster, Scusset Beach in Sagamore and Salisbury Beach at the mouth of the Merrimack River.

The state is also highlighting renovations at Mohawk Trail State Forest along Route 2 in the Berkshires. DCR spent $1.4 million on upgrades like new bathrooms and roads.

The camping season runs April through October, and last year 50,000 people stayed at state campgrounds. Reservations can be made online through the Reserve America website.
