MASSACHUSETTS — Massachusetts is at an elevated risk of localized flooding Monday, with a new round of thunderstorms set to move across the state from the west this afternoon and into the nighttime hours.

The biggest risk in the state will be between Springfield and Worcester. The Boston area, Essex County and communities near Rhode Island will also be at risk, although slightly less. The timing will be between 2 and 10 p.m. on Monday.

Thunderstorms with strong winds and hail are possible, but less likely due to slightly cooler temperatures expected on Monday, according to the National Weather Service.

Monday's storms will follow rounds of heavy rain that fell Sunday. Downpours devastated parts of Connecticut near New Haven along the Housatonic River, with as much as 8 inches of rain recorded in some areas.

But after Monday, forecasters are predicting a pretty calm week. High temperatures will be in the low 70s for much of the state, and cooler out on the Cape. There's no rain in the forecast through at least Friday, according to the weather service.
