MASSACHUSETTS — Residents across a wide section of Massachusetts are being warned to take precautions over the next two days with temperatures that will feel close to 100.

A heat advisory issued by the National Weather Service will go into effect at 11 a.m. Wednesday and last until 8 p.m. Thursday covering much of the state, excluding coastal areas and the Berkshires.

The heat will be driven by a combination of ambient air temperature and humidity. The combination of those factors, called the heat index, will make it feel close to 100 degrees. The heat wave is expected to peak on Thursday.

"Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances," the heat advisory says. "Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening."

Although the heat advisory ends on Thursday night, Friday will also be very hot across the state. The heat index could reach between 95 and 100 between Worcester and Boston, and in the Connecticut River Valley.

The state hasn't seen heat indices near 100 since the end of July, when temperatures reached the high 80s and low 90s in both the Boston and Worcester areas. That heat also came with higher humidity levels.
