It's not often we yearn for 2020, but just two years ago Jan. 11 was the first of back-to-back 70-degree days.

Now we're bracing for a bone-chilling arctic blast that will bring dangerous, potentially record-breaking cold to Massachusetts early this week.

Wind chills for Monday will seem balmy compared with what's to come. It's going to feel like 15 degrees for much of the day until late at night, when temperatures start plummeting.

Tuesday morning wind chills are going to be minus-8 degrees in Boston and as low as minus-20 in the western part of the state. The Cape & Islands are the only parts of Massachusetts that could feel above 0 degrees — and just barely at that.

It's the kind of cold that could result in frostbite for someone exposed to it for as little as 30 minutes.

"An arctic blast will bring frigid temperatures and breezy winds to the region on Tuesday," the National Weather Service said.

A wind chill advisory will be in effect for high terrain in Central and Western Massachusetts.

Temperatures will mellow out by mid-week, but snow is possible Thursday night and another system is looming this weekend.
