More People Leaving Massachusetts, Fewer Moving In: Study

Massachusetts ranked seventh on the list of states people moved out of the most last year, up from eighth in 2020.

Former Massachusetts residents who left in 2020 listed retirement (37.5%), a new job or transfer (35%) and family reasons (17.5%) as the main reason for their move. But the study echoes earlier warnings about the state's high cost of living.

MASSACHUSETTS — More people moved out of Massachusetts than moved to the Bay State in 20202, according to a study released Monday.

United Van Lines, which sponsored the study, said 2,984, or 58 percent of, the 5,183 shipments it handled in Massachusetts last year were out-bound shipments. Only six states — New Jersey, Illinois, New York, Connecticut, California and Michigan — had higher outbound migration percentages than the Bay State's 57.6 percent in 2021.

Massachusetts was eighth on the list in 2020.

Former Massachusetts residents who left in 2020 listed retirement (37.5%), a new job or transfer (35%) and family reasons (17.5%) as the main reason for their move. But the study echoes earlier warnings that the trend for more remote work and the state's high housing costs could fuel more outward migration from Massachusetts.

Vermont, South Dakota, West Virginia and other states on the top 10 list for inbound migration tended to be more rural than the outbound migration list. For a second straight year, Massachusetts was 47th on the list for inbound migration.
