New MA Pork Law Goes Into Effect: MA Food Week

MASSACHUSETTS — Welcome to Patch's weekly round up of food and restaurant news in Massachusetts, where we review openings, closings and more in the state's dining scene.

On Thursday, a long-awaited animal welfare law went into effect on pork products. The law bans the sale in Massachusetts of pork from sows that live in gestation cages — metal enclosures that confine the animals so tightly they can't turn around.

The law was part of a 2016 ballot measure regulating the treatment of livestock animals and the products that come from them. The pork law was tied up in legal challenges for years until a settlement was reached earlier in August.

Pickle beer returns

In non-sentient food news, Woburn's Lord Hobo brewing is making its pickle beer available again. The brewery partners with Grillo's Pickles to make the beer, which is "brimming with fresh, bright, and tangy flavors, while still drinking smooth from the lager yeast."

Lord Hobo will hold a pickle beer launch party on Saturday at 2 p.m. at its Boston location featuring a variety of foods that use pickles, according to the brewery.
