Suspected Gunman Who Sparked Campus Manhunt A Juvenile Brandishing Air Gun: Cops

A shelter-in-place order was issued and all classes and events were canceled.

LOWELL, MA — The suspected gunman who sparked a massive manhunt and the shutdown of the UMass Lowell campus Wednesday turned out to be a juvenile brandishing an air gun, police said.

"The firearm, which is confirmed to be an airsoft replica weapon, has been recovered," the Lowell Police Department said in a media release.

The release made no mention of whether the juvenile was charged with a crime.

The Lowell Police Department referred questions to Robert Mills of John Guilfoil Public Relations. Mills said the police were "not releasing any additional details at this time beyond the statement the department released. "

The Lowell Police Department received a report of an individual possibly armed with a firearm about 2:30 p.m., according to the release.

"Patrol officers immediately responded and began to search the area," the release said. "The Lowell Police Department Unmanned Aircraft System (Drone) was deployed as well as the Massachusetts State Police Air Wing. Numerous Police K9s, Massachusetts State Police Troopers, the NEMLEC Swat Team, UMass Lowell Police, LNHP Law Enforcement Rangers, the FBI, and ATF also responded to assist."

A shelter-in-place order was issued and all classes and events were canceled while police searched for the suspected gunman.
