A few facts, figures and tidbits to start your Wednesday.

2. LEARN POWERPOINT: Learn how to use Microsoft PowerPoint 2007 to create a slide show of your favorite family photos. Incorporating photos and music, you learn to create a wonderful moving photo album. Registration required; call the Acton Memorial Library Reference Department. at 978-929-6543 to do so. Class begins at 3 p.m.

3. SCHOOL BUS DRIVER APPRECIATION DAY: First Student is hosting a school bus driver appreciation day in every location throughout the country to celebrate how thankful they are for their hard work and dedication to safety.

This event, from 11 a.m. to noon at 352 Concord Road in Sudbury, is not open to the general public. Drivers and key school employees will be invited.

4. ODD HOLIDAYS HELD TODAY: Today is Mother Goose Day. Mother Goose Day was created only recently, as a day to appreciate nursery rhymes and stories. They are a favorite of children and their parents. The term "Mother Goose" dates back to the 1650's. It refered to stories like Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood and Sleeping Beauty. It does not appear to represent a particular person, as many of "Mother Goose" stories were written both before and after this term was first used. And, the stories were written by numerous authors.

5. THIS DAY IN HISTORY:

  • 1707 — The Act of Union joined England and Scotland to form Great Britain.
  • 1931 — The Empire State Building opened in New York City. At 102 stories, it would be the world's tallest building for the next 41 years. Click to see the current tallest.
  • 1941 — Orson Welles's Citizen Kane, considered by many the greatest film ever made, premiered in New York.
  • 1948 — The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea) was established with Kim Il Sung as president.
  • 1960 — The Soviet Union shot down an American U-2 reconnaissance plane over Soviet territory.
  • 1967 — Elvis Presley married Priscilla Beaulieu. (They divorced in 1973.)
  • 1991 — 44-year-old Texas fireballer Nolan Ryan hurled his seventh and final no-hitter in a 3-0 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays. That same day, Oakland's Rickey Henderson broke Lou Brock’s stolen base record.
  • 2003 — President Bush made a speech aboard an aircraft carrier proclaiming “major combat operations in Iraq have ended.”
