State Rep. Paul Adams will be challenging Sen. Barry Finegold for his seat in the state senate in November, according to unofficial election results. Adams won the Republican nomination on Thursday, beating challenger Andover selectman Alex Vispoli by less than 100 votes. Adams beat Vispoli, garnering 50.87 percent of the votes in the Second Essex and Middlesex district, which consists of Andover, Tewksbury, Dracut and Lawrence. In votes, Adams beat Vispoli with 2,648 votes to 2,557 votes. Finegold won the Democratic nomination unopposed. Vispoli did win his town, beating Adams 1,267 votes to 754 votes in Andover.
