Andover DPW Reminds Residents About Helping To Keep Catch Basins Clear

With a forecast for more snow, followed by rain and melting snow, officials said catch basins play an important role in preventing flooding.

ANDOVER, MA — With a forecast calling for more snow today followed by rain and melting snow this evening, the Andover Department of Public Works (DPW) is warning residents about the possibility of flooding.

In a series of social media messages, the DPW has reiterated the importance of catch basins (stormwater drains) being clear in order to collect the rainwater and melting snow.

Andover DPW said the Andover Highway Division has been hard at work clearing debris from many of the 7,400 catch basins around town.

But residents are reminded to do their part.

"You can assist town crews by making sure catch basins around your home are clear of leaves, debris and snow and ice," the Andover DPW wrote. "Blocked or covered basins can keep water from flowing into the drain and can quickly result in flood conditions on streets and properties."

The Andover DPW continued: "Being vigilant about clearing storm drains can greatly reduce the chance of flooding, and clearing debris and litter also helps to protect local water bodies."

Officials said residents can report clogs within the drain by filling out an Andover Public Works request online.

Residents also are reminded that they never should attempt to remove the grate from a catch basin (stormwater drain) even if the drain is clogged.
