At the Andover Garden Club’s November meeting, designer Keelia Otten will demonstrate flower arranging, creating a half dozen designs that will be raffled off at the end of the program. Otten is the owner and creative director of Helios (https://www.heliosfloral.com), a boutique floral-design studio located in Salem MA. The studio offers custom wedding and event design, seasonal workshops, and small-garden design services.

Originally from Denver CO, Otten began working with flowers in 2015. Her original love is the garden, with all its layers of intrigue. Having earned a degree in biology, she has always been fascinated by how intricately organized, yet unruly, plants can be. In October 2018 she moved to Massachusetts. Here, she constantly marvels at the lush and diverse New England flora.

Otten is committed to the environment and to reducing Helios’ environmental impact. For example, she creates her designs without using floral foam, a commonly used plastic product treated with chemical detergents that has been found to contribute to microplastic pollution in aquatic environments. The firm donates one percent of profits to the Xerces Society, a science-based non-profit environmental organization dedicated to the conservation of invertebrate species and their habitats.
