Andover Sees High Turnout in Heat

Democratic Congressman Ed Markey won the special election to fill John Kerry's Senate seat, but Andover picked Republican Gabriel Gomez.

And despite temperatures in the 90s and almost crippling humidity, Andover saw an impressive 30 percent turnout.

Town Clerk Lawrence Murphy said that there was a rush of people early in the morning and things remained steady through the day. Even at 6:30 p.m., there was a line of cars heading into Andover High School full of voters wanting their voices heard.

With 10 out of 11 precincts reporting Tuesday night, Gomez recieved slightly more than 54 percent of the vote, compared to Markey's slightly more than 45 percent.

According to this map on The Huffington Post, most communities in the Merrimack Valley voted for Gomez.
