Andover, MA — The students at Doherty Middle School have done their part to help those less fortunate this holiday season.

The Joy of Giving was the theme of the recently-completed Student Council Food Drive. Students collected and donated 1,700 pounds of food to Bread and Roses, a Lawrence-based nonprofit that helps to address food insecurity in the Merrimack Valley.

According to Bread and Roses, the donated food will go into pantry orders, Grab & Go meals and community meals.

On Dec. 16, the food was packed into a truck at Doherty and shipped to Bread and Roses.

Doherty Principal Robin Wilson told Patch that representatives from Bread and Roses informed the students that their donation was the largest the organization had received this season.
