Investigate Your Ancestry at the Library

The Andover Memorial Hall Library is providing a number of workshops related to genealogy research throughout March.

Have you evered wondered if there was anything interesting about your family line? Well, the is offering a host of programs that center on genealogy and investigating your ancestory. All events take place at the library. Check them out below.

“Genealogy Lock-In” - Friday, March 4 from 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. - Beginning and experienced genealogists are invited to an evening of after-hours genealogy research. Attendees will have exclusive access to library resources including computers, microfilm readers, the Andover Room, WIFI, and databases from Heritage Quest, Ancestry Library, and New England Ancestors. Reference librarians will be available to answer questions and to provide guided assistance. A light meal will be provided. “Looking After the Poor: Finding Your Ancestors in New England Poverty Records”- Tuesday, March 8 at 7 p.m. - Discover how your not so wealthy New England ancestors may have left behind a wealth of information found in town poverty records. Come find out about “strangers taken in”, “warning out”, and settlement law. Marian Pierre-Louis will take you into the depths of New England town records to reveal the hard to find information about your elusive ancestors. World Winds: Willow Flute Ensemble performance - Sunday, March 13 at 2 p.m. - Come hear the Willow Flute Ensemble present a concert of world music from Venezuela, Romania, Russia, and elsewhere.  Some compare the sound of a flute choir to a pipe organ; others liken it to a string orchestra, but with many sizes of flutes instead of big and little members of the violin family. “Genealogy Myths and Legends” - Tuesday, March 15 at 7 p.m. - Michael Brophy will explain and debunk some of the popular fiction about Genealogy and Family History. Myths include: “I can do all of my family research online,” “Courthouse burned and destroyed all the records”, “Name was Changed at Ellis Island”, and “I am descended from an Indian”, be prepared for an end to some old fairy tales! “Naturalization and Probate Records” - Tuesday, March 29 at 7 p.m. - Learn about the probate and naturalization records on microfilm held by the Massachusetts Archives as well as resources including the Judicial Archives and the National Archives of Waltham, MA. Presented by Autumn Haag, Reference Archivist, MA Archives.
