Topsail Addiction Treatment has opened a new outpatient treatment program in Andover, MA at the Doctor’s Park complex on Haverhill Street. David Ray, the Executive Director, said “I am excited to bring together a incredible team of clinicians and support staff who are providing superior and cutting edge treatment to clients with substance use disorder.”

Topsail provides first class outpatient treatment known as PHP, IOP and OP levels of care (also called partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient and outpatient addiction treatment). The agency is committed to provide the best treatment in eastern Massachusetts and the Boston area.

We asked Mr. Ray why Andover is a good location for an outpatient addiction treatment program. David Ray responded, “Andover, and the entire Merrimack Valley, has been hard hit by the addiction epidemic. It is important to provide addiction treatment resources to individuals in and around their community. Providing outpatient level of care in the community is especially important because many clients remain at work or home and attend IOP in the evening after work. Making addiction treatment available and easy to access is an essential component of good treatment.”

Addiction treatment is a challenging field to be in. We asked Mr. Ray why he is in this line of work, what attracted him to help people suffering from addiction and alcoholism. He responded “My personal story is well known, I have real life experience with alcoholism and addiction and understand how great the need is, particularly now. At one time in my life I would have thought being in addiction treatment was the last thing I’d have interest in. Now, there is no where else I’d rather be than helping people into recovery. It’s not always easy, people are messy and often times they are hurt and angry and they can sometimes lash out at you in unanticipated ways. I’ve had my share of unwarranted mud slung at me. However, when you understand that we are all here for only a few decades you begin to appreciate how important it is that we live life to the fullest and help as many people as you can. I want our clients to capture that perspective and use it as motivation to get well.”

The mission of Topsail Addiction Treatment is to provide the best quality addiction treatment available in Massachusetts. Ray elaborated on that by adding “There isn’t enough treatment available in Massachusetts. Even more than that, there is definitely not enough quality treatment in Massachusetts. The mission of Topsail is to provide world class addiction treatment in Andover and all of north suburban Boston. We strive to help our clients and their families find meaningful and lasting recovery.” But there are challenges to providing excellent SUD (substance use disorder) treatment. Ray continued, “The events and relationship dynamics that finally thrust someone into treatment continue to produce negative consequences and behaviors once in treatment. Think the most challenging part of this is to keep a client and their family motivated until the tide of negative consequences finally recedes. It’s tough but with the right staff and program it is possible.”

Staff does appear to be important when choosing the right treatment program for you or your loved one. We asked Ray about his staff and why he believed they were so special. “The staff is the product we produce” Ray commented. “The staff is the most crucial portion of a successful treatment program. They are the ones treating and interacting with the clients and their families. The staff at Topsail is a hand picked group of highly experienced and capable people. I feel like I have a dream team assembled and I’m so thrilled for the clients who get to experience treatment with them.”

Ray continued “Our staff is really what distinguishes us from other programs. We spent a long time thinking about and developing the staff profile and are very excited about who we have been able to recruit at Topsail. Our staff is professional, caring, experienced and smart. I would say we have the best staff around and I am very proud of them for the work they do day in and day out. It’s an all-star team.”

With such a fantastic start, we asked what the future holds for David and Topsail. “As you may know, we have been working for years to build a new building with inpatient level of care, that is, detox and residential treatment. Our hope is to have that open next year (2021). I think we are on track to do that. It will be a brand-new building with state-of-the-art facilities and staff. I think its going to make a serious impact in the region for good. We are extremely excited about that.” He mentioned the coming impact of the COVID-19 on mental health and said “we know, and public health experts have been forecasting, that the mental health impact on residents of Massachusetts is going to be big and long lasting. We are already preparing for the increase in demand for treatment space and beds. We are and will be operationally ready to help those who are and who will be looking for treatment in the near future.”
