$35K Raised For Displaced Residents Following Arlington Fire
Two residents have moved back into their apartments at Chestnut Manor, and 19 others have been given new units.
ARLINGTON, MA — A fundraiser for the residents displaced by the Jan. 22 fire at Chestnut Manor raised nearly $35,000 as of Thursday, according to Health and Human Services and the Arlington Housing Authority.
One person died, and 21 others were displaced by the fire, which started in a third-floor apartment. The state fire marshal's office determined the cause was an electric baseboard heater that either malfunctioned or was close to combustible items.
Two residents have since been able to move back into their apartments, which were not significantly damaged. Nineteen others have been assigned to new permanent units, and move-in dates have been scheduled.

"Helping the residents impacted by the fire move forward has truly been a community effort," Health & Human Services Director Christine Bongiorno said. "We're grateful for the support of everyone who has contributed to this effort, from those who have made monetary donations to the organizations that have collaborated to provide critical aid to residents in need."
A coalition of members of Health & Human Services, the Council on Aging, the AHA, Minuteman Senior Services, the Somerville Homeless Coalition and the American Red Cross have worked to help residents salvage their belongings, replace what could not be saved and move them to new apartments. Arlington EATS has been helping keep residents' refrigerators and cabinets stocked.

"Every bit of support for our residents is both meaningful and impactful," AHA Executive Director Jack Nagle said. "The community's response during this time of need has been invaluable, and I'm confident that generosity will be a tremendous benefit for our residents as they move into their new homes."
Once residents have moved into their new units, Arlington EATS will work with them to stock their new kitchens with food items. Additionally, residents have been provided with Visa and grocery store gift cards to offset the cost of food and clothing while they are temporarily living in local hotels.
