ARLINGTON, MA — Speakers from the Arlington-based advocacy group “Save the Alewife Brook” spoke during the MBTA’s year-end meeting to raise awareness about the Brook’s pollution, according to a report from YourArlington.

Group Founder Kristen Anderson requested that the MBTA work with the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority and the city of Cambridge to dedicate space of the Alewife garage rebuild project for underground sewage storage. Anderson also asked the MBTA Board members to involve the public in their business more overall by forming a community advisory group.
According to the group, 51 million gallons of untreated sewage were dumped into Alewife Brook, despite the permitted limit being 7.29 gallons.
