ARLINGTON, MA — The police department presented a check of nearly $3,000 to a good cause after extensive fundraising efforts.

The Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation for Autism became the recipient of a $2,972,83 check that was presented to the nonprofit Tuesday. According to the foundation the proceeds will be used for direct financial aid, acquisition of medical equipment, and camp programs.

A large portion of the money was raised through the sale of special patches and t-shirts, which were designed by Officer Thomas Guanci and sold by the department during Autism Awareness Month in April. He and Officer Jennifer McGurl organized and managed the sales. Chief Julie Flaherty bestowed a Certificate of Accommodation on each of the two officers.
