New Cafe Enjoying Its First Month In Medford
The business feels it has found a home in West Medford.
MEDFORD, MA — Twisted Tree Cafe is enjoying its first month in Medford.
The business’s third location launched on 421 High Street in the downtown area in late November.
The first Twisted Tree opened its doors in the town of Lincoln in 2019. Two years later, its second spot opened up at Lincoln’s deCordova Sculpture Museum. This third location is the first expansion for the business beyond its original community.
According to Twisted Tree’s Director of Operations Ash McLaughlin, the decision to come to Medford was an easy one for one of its owners, C.J. Doherty.

“He was born and raised in Medford,” McLaughlin told Patch. “His parents live here… so he said ‘why not do another cafe?’”
She added that Doherty also works in construction and excavation in the city.

McLaughlin said the reception from the community has been nothing but positive, and she is glad to see that locals are just excited to have Twisted Tree in town as the business is to be there.
“The neighborhood has been really, really, warm and welcoming,” McLaughlin said. “Giving us gifts and just coming by. It’s been really nice.”
Twisted Tree’s menu aims to be healthy with gluten-free, vegetarian, and plant-based options. The Medford location reportedly features an array of breakfast sandwiches, soup, salad and sandwiches. Mclaughlin believes the menu variety and extensiveness is what sets it apart from other cafes.
“We try to source locally as much as we can, and we make a lot of the stuff in-house,” McLaughlin said. “Prices are getting crazy in grocery stores and everywhere now, we try to always have something on the menu that is affordable.”
While she highlighted the menu, McLaughlin emphasized that good service and hospitality is truly what has made Twisted Tree successful thus far.
“It’s important how you make customers feel when they’re here, and I think that’s a big reason why we have been so successful in Lincoln,” McLaughlin told Patch. “We’ve had really loyal customers for almost eight years.”
Twisted Tree has approximately 10 staff members, and McLaughlin said she plans on increasing staff in the spring. McLaughlin has been with the business since day one.
Mayor Breanna Lungo-Koehn paid her first visit to the cafe this week along with School Committee Vice Chair Jenny Graham and gave her seal of approval.
“Not only are the drinks amazing but there are plenty of delicious food items as well, even gluten free options which I appreciate,” Lungo-Koehn said.
