Heinz is Petitioning to Make the Day After the Super Bowl a National Holiday

Studies show that thousands take the day after the big game off anyway. Would it make more sense just to make it a national holiday?

Despite having a scheduled work day, thousands of Americans will take the day after the Super Bowl off to avoid the post-game day blues. With the New England Patriots set to take on the Atlanta Falcons Sunday, studies show that many Patriots fans are already planning to take the day off.

America's largest producer of ketchup is giving its employees the a holiday on the Monday after the game, and is petitioning to have the nation do the same.

On Wednesday, Kraft Heinz set up a change.org petition in the hopes of making the day after the "Big Game" a national holiday. In its petition, Heinz cited statistics that show that over 16 million people call in sick or don't show up for work, and that companies nationwide lose an average of $1 billion due to poor productivity.

"We can all agree that going to work the Monday after the “Big Game” on Sunday is awful," read the petition."So as far as we’re concerned at Heinz, we as a nation should stop settling for it being the worst work day of the year."

A study from the Workforce Institute at Kronos in 2016 shows that many Patriots fans may have already taken the day off. The study found that 43 percent of the 10.5 million Americans that requested to take the day off in advance in 2016 did so because their favorite team was playing in the game.

"We don’t settle for that awesome football Sunday to be just like every other day of the year," reads the petition."No. We eat. We drink. And we be merry, having the tastiest times of our lives. But then the very next day we settle for that Monday being a terrible work day."
