AG Warns of 'Deed Collection Services' Scam

Don't pay $50 to $90 for something you can get for free or at minimal charge from the Registry of Deeds.

By Chris Helms:

There are plenty of scammers out there eager to overcharge you for information you can get yourself for free or minimal cost.

The state's attorney general, Martha Coakley, has issued a warning about one such con: getting homeowners to fork over $50 to $90 for a copy of a deed.

In fact, most homeowners get a copy of the deed at their real estate closing. Or you can go to the Registry of Deeds online or in person to get one for free or a nominal charge.

If you've already been the victim of this "deed collection services" flim-flam, here's how to contact the attorney general's office to file a complaint.
