Local Makes National Soccer Team Roster

Geoff Cameron will compete for team USA in three friendlies and two World Cup qualifiers this summer.

Soccer star Geoff Cameron obviously made a good impression on U.S. national team head coach Jurgen Klinsmann during practice this week in Orlando, Fla. because the Attleboro native was named to the final roster on Friday.

Cameron, a defender who also plays for Major League Soccer's Houston Dynamo, will compete this summer in three friendlies (against Scotland, Brazil and Canada) and two World Cup qualifying matches (against Antigua and Barbuda and Guatemala). He was invited to train with the national team last week. The squad was reduced from 27 to 23 players on Friday.

"We have said from the beginning that these games are all about results, and we have chosen the 23 players who are in the best form right now and ready to get the job done," said Klinsmann in a statement that appears on the national team's website. "These guys have put in a tremendous amount of hard work in the last 10 days, and they are hungry to get started with the matches."

The coach said of Cameron last week, "[He] is a guy that is really knocking at the door, with a very strong January camp [for the national team], but also very strong performances for Houston."
