Monthly Meetings Likely in the Cards For Attleboro School Committee

The school committee will likely meet monthly instead of bi-weekly.

The Attleboro School Committee voted 7-1 Monday night to send a plan to the policy subcommittee that would call for monthly, rather than bi-weekly, meetings.

The vote came at Superintendent Kenneth Sheehan's first official meeting with the school committee after being hired last spring. Sheehan, who proposed the idea, said that if necessary, the committee could call special meetings to discuss urgent business.

"I think it’s a lot easier to in fact have a special meeting than it is when you would possibly cancel a meeting," he said.

Ken Parent was the only school committee member in opposition.

"I don’t feel like meeting once a month would be sufficient in order to do our job," he said, adding that many Attleboro residents are updated on school-related business through bi-weekly school committee meetings.

Sheehan also said if the new schedule did not work, members could choose to go back to bi-weekly meetings.

"I think we can give it a try and see how it works," school committee member Fran Zito said. "If it doesn’t work then we can go back to the other way. You never know until you try something. Lets give it a shot."
