Tex Barry's a Family and Attleboro Tradition

Owner Arthur Bombardier shares the story of how he became the owner and operator of the place where he had his first job.

Arthur Bombardier began working at Tex Barry's Coney Island Diner in Attleboro more than 30 years ago, and he said he's happy to be at the place where he had his first job.

"My mother was working for the gentleman that had this place beforehand," he said. "I started working for her and my aunt when I was 15."

Bombardier said he wasn't always sure he was going to make and sell hotdogs for a living, but it did grow on him.

"When I first started, I was thinking about becoming an accountant," he said.

Bombardier said his mother bought the restaurant in 1985 when the original chain that opened in 1929 went out of business. He said he had to take over because she had become ill the same year.

Bombardier said the special part of his business is the hamburger sauce. He closely guards the recipe, which comes from the original chain. Since the owner retired and sold all the other locations, Bombardier said he's the only one left who knows the recipe.

"If I told you, I'd have to kill you," said Bombardier when asked about the recipe.

One might not think in these days of health food and soy protein that a hot dog shop could survive, but Bombardier said the business is actually thriving. Tex Barry's is the top reviewed restaurant in Attleboro, according to Yelp.

"I didn't know anything about it until [former City Councilor] Duff White said that to me," Bombardier said. "I was like 'what are you talking about?' I mean, I know Yelp and I always look on Yelp, and we've always had good reviews. I just never realized I was number one."

As with many other restaurants and businesses, Bombardier said his success is due to how he treats the customers. He said friends and family always come in as well and make a great nostalgic atmosphere.

"I think it's good quality food, being consistent and treating people right," said Bombardier about the reasons for success.

Bombardier said he donates to the Attleboro DARE Program, the United Way, Firefighter fundraisers and the Attleboro Police Department.

"When some kids come in for donations for some sort of program they’re doing, I always try to help out," he said.

Tex Barry's is located at 31 County St. in Attleboro.
